A theoretical thrust density limit for Hall thrusters

چکیده
Abstract Hall Thrusters typically operate at thrust densities on the order of 10 N/m $$^2$$ 2 , which appear to be orders magnitude below density limits suggested in previous literature. These have been considered here and each component is analyzed demonstrate relative contribution total density. Dependencies upon thruster geometry, electron mobility, applied magnetic field are revealed compared with experimental measurements This analysis reveals that conventional strengths, appears 1000 . It shown this limit can further increased through higher fields, voltage, suppression anomalous transport. suggests thrusters made much more compact operated power densities, given improvements thermal management materials.

Sizing of Hall effect thrusters with input power and thrust level: An Empirical Approach
Sizing methods can be used to get a first estimate of the required Hall thruster dimensions and operating conditions for a given input power and a corresponding thrust level. After a review of the existing methods, a new approach, which considers the three characteristic thruster dimensions, i.e. the channel length, the channel width and the channel mean diameter as well as the magnetic field, ...
متن کاملMultiscale Modeling of Hall Thrusters
Multiscale Modeling of Hall Thrusters Hall thrusters are efficient space propulsion devices that produce thrust by accelerating quasineutral plasma. The thruster consists of a channel with one end open to the ambient environment. The neutral propellant is injected at the closed end and is ionized by electrons produced by an externally mounted cathode. A radial magnetic field is applied across t...
متن کاملAn Inverted-Pendulum Thrust Stand for High-Power Electric Thrusters∗
The inverted-pendulum method of thrust measurement for high-power electric thrusters is described analytically and experimentally. Two sources of uncertainty in the thrust measurements are investigated: those due to changes in the sensitivity of the inverted pendulum and those due to tare forces resulting from thermal stresses and electromagnetic forces acting on the flexural elements. An ideal...
متن کاملA Hydrodynamic-Based Erosion Model for Hall Thrusters
Lifetime issues for Hall thrusters are becoming increasingly important as the mission envelopes for such devices continue to expand. A hydrodynamic model of the plasma flow within a Hall thruster acceleration channel is developed to analyze the erosion of the channel walls over time. Comparisons to experimental data are presented. The total erosion rate over the initial 1200 hours is captured f...
متن کاملTransport Physics in Hall Plasma Thrusters
An analysis of measurements supporting the presence of anomalous cross-field electron mobility in Hall plasma accelerators is presented. Non-intrusive laser-induced fluorescence measurements of neutral and ionized xenon velocities, and various electrostatic probe diagnostic measurements are used to locally determine the effective electron Hall parameter inside the accelerator channel. These val...
